Make Marano in Calabria your next must see destination.
Last night we visited the village of Marano and I was gobsmacked by the vista of houses stacked on top of one another all the way up the hillside. It was postcard perfect. And I thought this was only typical of the Amalfi Coast. We visited a museum and a ruined castle at the highest point in the village.
We were privileged to dine in a private home dating back to the 1600s. I will now attempt to recollect the menu|
1. Appertivo with pre-starters of prosciutto, pickles, cheese, brioche filled with meat and cheese and tiny breadsticks studded with olives.
2. Homemade red wine with individual plates of antipasti including: 1/2 brioches, own with piping hot chilli tapenade with roasted eggplant and carrot, the other 1/2 with a green pea and potato spread decorated with a ladybug made from tomato, cloves and olive. On the same plate was a delicious egg and zucchini bake, plus prosciutto and smoked cheese.
3. We are now up to the first course believe it or not. This was a plate of 2 pastas: spinach lasagna and roasted capsicum gnocchi. The gnocchi was perfect and was made without potato. Am hoping to learn the secret of great gnocchi.
4. Now for the main course:This was chicken stuffed with prosciutto, crumbed on a skewer, with sides of broccoli, roast potatoes and a skewer threaded with arancini balls, roasted cherry tomatoes and zucchini. Are you full just reading this?
5. Pre-dessert included a 1/2 serve of a small beautifully ripe can't elope with strawberries sprinkled with lemon zest.
6. For those with space along came dessert: homemade Tiramisu with macerated fig in a hazelnut liqueur and a hazelnut hidden inside, instead of a fig pip.
7. Last but not least cafe espressos and the most Devine homemade creamy Leoncello.
Bon apetite.
PS photos will follow later (they take forever to fiddle around with)
